MRI contrast helps radiologists see certain tissues, blood vessels, inflammation, tumors, and other abnormalities more clearly. The contrast used for most MRI examinations is a gadolinium-based contrast agent, or GBCA.
Most patients tolerate MRI contrast well. Temporary coolness at the injection site, nausea, headache, or dizziness can occur. Allergic-like reactions are uncommon, and severe reactions are exceedingly rare.

What Is the Contrast Used for an MRI?

How Contrast Supervision Protects Patients
MRI contrast is administered within a defined clinical-supervision system. The team screens the patient, prepares the IV, monitors for symptoms, and maintains medications and equipment for treating reactions. Some outpatient centers use virtual contrast supervision: qualified professionals remain physically present with the patient while a supervising physician is immediately available through real-time audio and video. If symptoms occur, the on-site team provides hands-on assessment and treatment, with emergency services activated when needed.

Seek emergency help for difficulty breathing; swelling of the tongue, lips, face, or throat; fainting; severe dizziness or weakness; rapidly spreading hives; a severe or blistering rash; or confusion.
